In brief

Esther Hicks is an American author and speaker best known for presenting the Teachings of Abraham, the body of work commonly called Abraham-Hicks. With her late husband Jerry Hicks, she developed a long-running Law of Attraction teaching ecosystem built around alignment, emotional guidance, deliberate creation and the Art of Allowing. Their workshops began in the late 1980s, Ask and It Is Given became a New York Times bestseller, and Abraham-Hicks Publications remains active in 2026 through workshops, cruises, Abraham NOW broadcasts, recordings and the new book The Art of Allowing.

Few bodies of work in modern manifestation culture have been repeated as often, quoted as widely, or absorbed into everyday self-help language as Abraham-Hicks. Long before social media turned manifestation into a daily content category, Esther and Jerry Hicks were traveling city to city, recording workshops, publishing books and building a vocabulary around alignment, emotion, desire, allowing and deliberate creation.

The public face of that work is Esther Hicks. In the Abraham-Hicks framework, Esther describes herself as interpreting or translating a non-physical collective consciousness called Abraham. Jerry Hicks, her husband and longtime collaborator, organized questions, built the workshop structure, developed the publishing operation and helped turn the material into one of the most recognizable bodies of teaching in the Law of Attraction space.

The story begins publicly in Phoenix in 1985. Esther has written that she found alignment with Abraham through meditation and that Jerry, already an unusually persistent questioner, began recording long sessions of questions and answers. By 1986 they were sharing recordings. By the late 1980s they were traveling extensively. Their official biography says they presented workshops in as many as 60 cities per year. The current organization still runs workshops, cruises, online broadcasts, subscriptions and a large archive of recordings.

Their influence is not limited to one book. Ask and It Is Given became a New York Times bestseller and remains the most widely recommended entry point into the system. Money, and the Law of Attraction reached number one on The New York Times bestseller list. The Law of Attraction, The Astonishing Power of Emotions, The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent and The Vortex expanded the framework across money, relationships, emotional guidance and daily decision-making.

In 2026 the work is still active. Abraham-Hicks Publications continues to schedule in-person workshops and international cruises, Abraham NOW streams live question-and-answer sessions, the official YouTube channel is approaching 900,000 subscribers, and a new book, The Art of Allowing, is scheduled for publication in December 2026. This is not merely a legacy archive. It is a living teaching ecosystem approaching its fifth decade.

Why Esther Hicks belongs in Self Help Flowers

Esther Hicks belongs in this encyclopedia because the Abraham-Hicks vocabulary has become part of the infrastructure of modern manifestation culture. Terms such as alignment, the Vortex, allowing, emotional guidance, downstream, segment intending and rampage of appreciation have moved far beyond the original workshops.

The contribution is partly philosophical and partly editorial. The Abraham-Hicks material repeatedly takes large metaphysical claims and turns them into small, memorable practices. A person does not need to master an elaborate system before using a focus wheel, writing a list of positive aspects, identifying the next better-feeling thought or setting an intention before entering the next segment of the day.

That practical quality is one reason the material has endured. The books are built around application. The workshops are built around questions. The recordings preserve real-time exchanges on money, relationships, work, health, grief, creativity, parenting, purpose and daily emotional life. The result is less like a single doctrine and more like an enormous case library organized around one central principle: pay attention to the relationship between thought, emotion and the experience you are creating.

There is also longevity. Abraham-Hicks Publications was distributing recordings in the 1980s, publishing books before the current manifestation boom, using YouTube in 2007, building livestream access long before hybrid events became ordinary, and is still scheduling workshops and new books in 2026. Very few contemporary self-help systems have remained this active across so many media eras.

Who or what is Abraham in the Abraham-Hicks framework?

The Abraham-Hicks body of work uses the name Abraham for what Esther describes as a non-physical group consciousness or Source Energy that she interprets through her own vocabulary. Esther has also used language such as infinite intelligence and Inner Being when explaining the experience.

The official YouTube archive makes an important distinction about Esther's own preferred wording. She does not typically describe the process with the word channeling, though she understands that other people may use that term. In Self Help Flowers, the cleanest description is therefore the one closest to her public language: Esther presents the Teachings of Abraham by translating or interpreting what she experiences as non-physical Source Energy.

This distinction matters editorially because the point of the profile is to document the body of work accurately rather than force it into vocabulary the teacher does not prefer. Abraham-Hicks is the public teaching identity. Esther Hicks is the person through whom the material is presented.

1985: the Phoenix beginning

Esther has repeatedly located the beginning of the Abraham-Hicks story in Phoenix in 1985. In an official note reflecting on the city, she wrote that Phoenix was where she and Jerry were living when the experience began and where she found what she describes as vibrational alignment with Abraham through meditation.

One of the most repeated origin stories involves Jerry's questions. Esther has said that Jerry had accumulated an extraordinary number of questions from his life experience and wanted to record a direct conversation. Those recorded exchanges became foundational material for what later developed into books, audio programs and live teaching.

The partnership is essential to understanding the work. Esther became the public translator of the material. Jerry became the relentless questioner, organizer and architect of the workshop machine. Their roles were different, but the published body of work emerged from the interaction between them.

1986 onward: the Abraham tapes and a word-of-mouth movement

The official site says that tens of thousands of people have shared the "Abraham tapes" since 1986. That detail helps explain the pre-internet growth of the work. Before algorithms, podcasts and social feeds, the material moved through physical recordings and personal recommendation.

This distribution model shaped the culture around the teachings. People did not encounter a polished one-minute clip first. They often encountered long-form question-and-answer recordings, listened repeatedly and passed them to someone else. The habit of repeated listening remains visible in the organization's current subscription programs, which still distribute workshop audio on a recurring basis.

The recordings also created an unusually deep archive. Rather than relying only on a few bestselling books, the Abraham-Hicks body of work contains decades of workshops addressing thousands of practical questions. That depth is one reason phrases from the teaching can be found in so many corners of modern self-help.

1987 to the road: building the workshop model

The official Esther Hicks biography states that Esther and Jerry presented Law of Attraction workshops in up to 60 cities per year beginning in the late 1980s. Hay House descriptions place their extensive national workshop route from 1989 onward, with San Antonio, Texas serving as a base.

One official story captures how improvisational the early expansion was. Esther recalls a Dallas meeting where the planned venue was unexpectedly unavailable. Jerry drove to a nearby Courtyard Marriott, secured a room, then used a hotel directory to begin mapping a national schedule. His logic was simple: go where the people are.

That road model became a defining feature of the work. Workshops were interactive rather than scripted lectures. Audience members asked about whatever mattered to them. The resulting recordings then became books, audio collections, DVDs, subscriptions and later digital content. The audience was not merely consuming the archive. It was helping generate it.

The three foundational laws

At the foundation of the Abraham-Hicks framework are three recurring ideas: the Law of Attraction, the Law of Deliberate Creation and the Art of Allowing. Different books and recordings expand them, but together they form the basic operating system of the teachings.

The Law of Attraction is presented as the principle that like attracts like. Attention and dominant thought are treated as active points of attraction. The Law of Deliberate Creation shifts the person from default focus toward intentional focus. The Art of Allowing addresses resistance: the idea that well-being is more easily experienced when contradictory thought is reduced rather than fought.

The distinctive Abraham-Hicks emphasis is that desire itself is not the problem. Wanting launches expansion. The work is then to come into emotional relationship with the desire in a way that feels increasingly aligned rather than repeatedly rehearsing its absence.

Foundation

Working idea

Law of Attraction

What receives sustained attention becomes central to the point of attraction.

Deliberate Creation

Choose thoughts, expectations and stories more intentionally rather than creating by habitual default.

Art of Allowing

Reduce resistance and practice openness to the well-being or experience already being asked for.

Emotional guidance: one of the most important Abraham-Hicks contributions

One of the strongest and most enduring features of the Abraham-Hicks system is its treatment of emotion as guidance. Instead of regarding emotion only as something to suppress, overcome or obey, the teaching uses emotion as feedback about the relationship between current thought and desired experience.

This idea became especially recognizable through the Emotional Guidance Scale. Different Abraham-Hicks books organize emotional states into a continuum from high-energy experiences such as joy, appreciation and empowerment through hopefulness and contentment to discouragement, anger, fear and powerlessness.

The practical move is not to demand an immediate jump from the lowest state to the highest. The method asks a more realistic question: what thought feels slightly better from here? That incremental approach has made the emotional guidance material unusually usable for people who find forced positivity artificial.

Ask and It Is Given: the central book

Hay House published Ask and It Is Given in 2004. The official Abraham-Hicks site describes it as the place to start and says it summarizes the teaching developed since 1986. The book also includes 22 recommended processes designed to move the reader from concept into practice.

The book became a New York Times bestseller and helped transform the workshop material into a much larger publishing phenomenon. Its importance inside the catalog comes from balance: it explains the philosophy, but it also gives readers a toolbox.

Those processes include methods such as the Rampage of Appreciation, the Focus Wheel, Segment Intending, scripting, lists of positive aspects and other structured exercises. The practical emphasis is central. The reader is repeatedly invited to do something with attention rather than merely agree with an idea.

The 22 processes: a toolbox rather than a single ritual

Process

Purpose

Rampage of Appreciation

Sustain attention on qualities, experiences or details that genuinely evoke appreciation.

Focus Wheel

Move gradually from a resistant thought toward statements that feel more believable and aligned.

Segment Intending

Set an intention before entering the next segment of the day: a call, meeting, drive, meal or conversation.

Positive Aspects

Deliberately identify what is working or appreciated in a person, place or situation.

Scripting

Write a desired experience as a deliberately chosen story.

Wouldn't It Be Nice If...

Use a softer phrase to open possibility without forcing belief.

The Prosperity Game

Practice expansion around money through imaginative allocation.

The Magical Creation Box

Collect images or statements representing desired experiences and use them as focus prompts.

Pivoting

Use awareness of an unwanted condition to clarify what is wanted instead.

Meditation

Quiet active thought long enough to reduce resistance and reestablish a sense of alignment.

Segment Intending: spirituality brought into ordinary moments

Segment Intending is one of the most practical ideas in the archive because it moves deliberate creation out of special meditation time and into the structure of an ordinary day.

The premise is simple: life naturally breaks into segments. You wake up. You shower. You enter a car. You open a laptop. You enter a meeting. You speak to someone. Before each segment, you can choose the quality of experience you would prefer to bring into it.

That small pause changes the orientation from reaction to authorship. It also explains why Abraham-Hicks has remained useful to people who are not looking for elaborate ritual. The system repeatedly returns attention to the next thought, the next feeling and the next segment.

Pivoting: use contrast to clarify desire

In the Abraham-Hicks vocabulary, contrast is not simply a problem to eliminate. An unwanted experience can clarify what is wanted. Pivoting is the movement from "this is what I do not want" toward "therefore, what do I prefer?"

The distinction matters because repeated analysis of what is unwanted can become another form of sustained attention on it. Pivoting uses the information contained in discomfort without remaining emotionally attached to the complaint.

That is a recurring Abraham-Hicks pattern: desire is discovered through life, emotion reveals the current relationship to the desire, and attention can then be redirected deliberately.

The Focus Wheel: moving thought without forcing it

The Focus Wheel has become one of the most recognizable Abraham-Hicks exercises because it respects believability. Rather than writing a dramatic statement the mind immediately rejects, the person starts with a desired central idea and then searches for surrounding statements that feel true enough to create movement.

The method is gradual. The goal is not verbal perfection. The goal is a perceptible shift in emotional relationship. This makes the practice structurally different from repeating an affirmation that produces internal argument every time it is spoken.

For Self Help Flowers, this is one of the most important practical contributions to document because it shows how the framework treats thought change as a sequence rather than a command.

Rampage of Appreciation: training attention toward what feels good

The Rampage of Appreciation is another Abraham-Hicks signature practice. The person deliberately notices and expands upon what is pleasing, beautiful, useful, generous, comfortable or alive in the immediate environment.

The word rampage is intentionally energetic. The practice is not a single polite gratitude sentence. It is sustained appreciative attention. A room, a person, a view, a meal, a piece of music or a small convenience can become the starting point.

This technique helped make appreciation a dynamic practice rather than a static list. It also connects Abraham-Hicks to a much wider self-help tradition in which repeated attention shapes perception and emotional state.

Money and well-being: one of the most searched parts of the teaching

Money, and the Law of Attraction focuses directly on financial and physical well-being and reached number one on The New York Times bestseller list, according to the official Esther Hicks biography.

The Abraham-Hicks approach treats money partly as a subject and partly as a mirror of thought. The practical emphasis is on the story a person repeatedly tells about money, the emotional response that story produces, and the possibility of deliberately improving that story rather than rehearsing scarcity.

The book also connects money with health, work and general well-being, reflecting the larger Abraham-Hicks tendency to treat life areas as different subjects operating through the same underlying process of attention, expectation and allowing.

The Vortex: the phrase that became a cultural shorthand

The Vortex became one of the most recognizable pieces of Abraham-Hicks vocabulary in the late 2000s. It describes a state of alignment with the desires, relationships and expanded version of life that the teaching says has already been created vibrationally.

In practical terms, "getting into the Vortex" became shorthand for changing state before demanding that external conditions change first. The emphasis is on alignment with self, relief from contradiction and a feeling of access to well-being.

The 2009 book The Vortex applied this framework particularly to relationships, including partnership, parenting, sexuality and self-appreciation. It also generated a large body of workshop video material that remains heavily viewed online.

YouTube in 2007: an early move into short-form digital teaching

Abraham-Hicks Publications began posting short videos to YouTube in 2007. The organization later released a compilation built from those early clips and described YouTube as a way of introducing Abraham to a wider audience than ever before.

That timing is worth noting. YouTube itself was still young. The clips translated a workshop-centered teaching model into short digital excerpts years before personal-development creators built entire businesses around algorithmic video.

The official Abraham-Hicks Publications channel, created in April 2007, had approximately 882,000 subscribers, 85.07 million lifetime views and 91 public videos in a Social Blade snapshot dated 19 September 2026. The relatively small public video count compared with total views highlights the long tail of the archive.

The Secret and the wider Law of Attraction wave

Abraham-Hicks occupies an important place in the history of The Secret. The official Abraham-Hicks site describes its material as a major source for the Law of Attraction wave that fed the film, and current publisher copy for Ask and It Is Given calls the Abraham teachings the original Law of Attraction material that inspired the hit movie.

Early versions of The Secret included Esther Hicks. Later editions did not. For this encyclopedia, the key historical point is the influence: the Abraham-Hicks vocabulary and workshop material were already established before the 2006 film brought Law of Attraction language into mass global culture.

That chronology matters because it positions Abraham-Hicks not as a response to The Secret, but as one of the bodies of work that helped create the environment in which The Secret could become a phenomenon.

Jerry Hicks: the questioner, organizer and co-builder

Any serious account of Abraham-Hicks has to give Jerry Hicks his flowers too. He was not simply a spouse standing beside a speaker. Esther's own accounts repeatedly describe Jerry as the person whose questions drove the earliest recorded conversations.

He also helped create the distribution and event system that carried the work across the United States. The road schedule, recordings, product catalog and relentless workshop rhythm were part of the contribution.

Jerry died in November 2011. Esther continued the workshops after his death and has continued publicly referring to him as part of the ongoing Abraham-Hicks story. The continuity is visible in the organization's current language, products and event culture.

After 2011: continuity instead of closure

After Jerry's death, the work did not become an archive. Esther continued live workshops and the organization kept expanding access to recordings. That continuity is one of the clearest measures of the strength of the platform they built together.

Abraham NOW later added a digital broadcast layer: live online question-and-answer sessions that can be watched live or on replay from anywhere. The model preserves the central workshop formula while removing geography as a barrier.

The subscription system also continues the older Abraham-tape tradition in digital form. Listeners can receive selected workshop highlights or full event recordings through the Abraham NOW platform. The medium changed. The core habit of repeated listening remained.

2026: a living workshop circuit

The current workshop page says Abraham-Hicks events are offered in around 25 cities each year, alongside two or three cruises or international cities. The 2026 schedule includes in-person events and a Spain, Portugal and Morocco cruise, with additional dates already scheduled into 2027.

This is significant proof of work. Four decades after the public teaching began, Esther is still traveling, meeting audiences and producing new workshop material in the same interactive format that built the archive.

The model has also become hybrid. Selected in-person workshops are streamed live on Abraham NOW, creating a bridge between the road tradition Jerry helped build and the digital audience now accessing the teachings worldwide.

The Art of Allowing: a new book in 2026

The Art of Allowing is scheduled for publication on 8 December 2026 through Hay House. Penguin Random House lists the hardcover at 336 pages and describes it as the first new book in more than ten years based on entirely new Abraham teachings.

The title is fitting because allowing has always been one of the foundational Abraham-Hicks ideas. The new book returns directly to that core and uses the Emotional Guidance Scale as a way of understanding where a person spends emotional time and how that relates to action and experience.

The publication is another reason this profile belongs in the active rather than purely historical part of Self Help Flowers. The body of work is still generating new primary material in 2026.

What changed because Abraham-Hicks existed?

The Abraham-Hicks legacy is partly the normalization of emotional alignment inside manifestation teaching. The work did not only tell people to think positively. It created an entire vocabulary for noticing when a thought feels resistant, moving incrementally and using emotion as directional information.

It also helped turn Law of Attraction into a practical daily system. Long before manifestation journals became social media content, Abraham-Hicks workshops were teaching processes for appreciation, scripting, intentional focus, money stories, relationships and future experiences.

The archive also influenced the format of modern self-help. Interactive audience questions, long-form live answers, recurring events, subscription recordings and evergreen clips now look ordinary in creator culture. Abraham-Hicks was doing versions of this model decades earlier.

Finally, the work became part of the intellectual prehistory of the 2006 manifestation explosion. Publisher copy still explicitly links the Abraham teachings to the cultural phenomenon of The Secret. That places Esther and Jerry inside the lineage, not on the sidelines of it.

The Self Help Flowers editorial view

What makes Abraham-Hicks exceptional is not one viral phrase. It is the consistency of the architecture. Desire creates direction. Emotion provides feedback. Attention can be chosen. Resistance can soften. Appreciation can be practiced. A person can enter the next moment more deliberately than the last.

The work also carries the fingerprint of two people. Esther brought the voice, warmth and public presence. Jerry brought questions, structure, movement and relentless curiosity. The teaching identity became Abraham-Hicks because the body of work was built through relationship.

Four decades later, the archive is still being used, the workshops are still happening and new books are still being published. That is a rare kind of endurance in self-help. It deserves flowers.
